CHALLENGE

A luxury SUV brand asked Polytec Group to manufacture enclosures for their electric batteries. And they wanted those battery packs delivered fully ready for assembly. The design and production of these enclosures is Polytec’s area of expertise. For the engineering and construction of the battery assembly line, they turned to IMA.

In total, each pack requires 65 parts to later install components such as a 48V battery and prepare the assembly for installation in the vehicle.

Sixty-five bushings and studs onto which nuts can be fitted later. These also vary in height, diameter, and connection type. In total, there are 13 different types of connectors.

SOLUTION

A battery assembly line with a total of eight robots that perform all of these operations.

Three to sort the various parts correctly. And five to assemble them and drill the necessary holes.

RESULT

A fully automated battery assembly line. Operating at a rate of 105 seconds per pack, it is designed to meet the target of 142,000 sets per year. With 65 components per pack, that amounts to more than 9,000,000 components to be assembled.
